Harris Poll Shows PGA Tour Vs. LIV Shaping Up To Be a Generational Battle![]()
Poll results show younger U.S. golf fans as more open to the startup tour, and that LIV's controversial Saudi backing is not discouraging fans from watching.![]()
Golf’s civil war arrived in the United States this week, as the LIV Golf series makes its American debut at Pumpkin Ridge outside Portland, Oregon. With eight of the top 50 golfers in the world, LIV has doubled the number of elite players it featured since its inaugural event just three weeks ago in London.![]()
But the real fight for golf’s future is better exemplified by the likes of Eugenio Chacarra, who was the world’s No. 2 amateur golfer before he signed with LIV last week, and James Piot, the 2021 U.S. Amateur champion who joined LIV prior to its debut last month.![]()
LIV has already engendered its share of controversy, not least for its support from the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, but the most striking aspect of the PGA Tour-LIV showdown, according to new data from the Harris Poll, is the generational split between the two organizations.![]()
Years in the making, LIV started in June, drawing golfers in part with the promise of guaranteed pay, while the PGA Tour only pays out those who make the cut. It is able to do that because of its near bottomless source of cash: the government of Saudi Arabia, which has a horrendous human rights record, including killing Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Critics have dismissed the Saudis’ interest in sporting beneficence as “sportswashing,” where a disreputable regime tries to rehabilitate its reputation through sports.![]()
The PGA Tour fought back by suspending 17 tour members who participated in the first LIV event.![]()
The Harris Poll surveyed Americans to get a clearer picture of this fight for the future of golf. While a much larger proportion of respondents were familiar with the PGA Tour than with LIV (80% as opposed to 35%), both golf fans and the population as a whole are LIV-curious. Nearly three-quarters (74%) of golf fans and 55% of U.S. adults who both have heard of LIV Golf said that they plan to watch an LIV event this year. Two-thirds of LIV-aware golf fans report already having watched LIV Golf’s first event.![]()
Here are three other trends we found in the data:![]()
The battle for the future of golf is playing out in the younger generations. Younger Americans are more aware of, more interested in and more open to the LIV tour, according to our polling — and the split is sharp. So while 40% of those 45 years old and younger are familiar with LIV, as opposed to 35% of the overall population, that figure falls to 27% among those aged 55 and over. And while 55% of U.S. adults familiar with the league plan to watch an LIV event, that number rises to more than 7 in 10 (71%) among those aged 18-34.![]()

Hi Barry:
Which comes first, confidence or success? It kind of sounds like the chicken or the egg riddle.
You need to be confident to succeed, but doesn't success also breeds confidence?
Belief definitely contributes to peak performance and winning, personal bests and other achievements can boost confidence.
However, you can still build confidence when you are not winning or achieving personal bests in every competition. In other words, many factors contribute to confidence other than victories.
In fact, if you are waiting for wins to be confident, chances are you will never compete with max confidence.
In our mental game surveys, we ask, What mental training strategies would you (or your athletes) benefit from the most?
One young athlete responded with the following: I become very demotivated after consistent bad performances. How can I regain my confidence and perform?
This question covers the relationship between preparation, confidence, and success. When you prepare to your utmost, knowing that preparation leads to confidence and success, you will be motivated to put in the work.
The problem is believing that solely success leads to confidence. With this mindset, you are waiting for a performance turnaround to boost your confidence. As a result, you will feel trapped in a cycle of bad performances, low confidence, and less motivation.
To break the cycle, you must take personal responsibility for building confidence.
Confidence is a skill. Similar to any technical skill in your sport, the mental skill of confidence requires constant attention to become stable and effective.
For example, during the 2022 offseason, J.J. McCarthy, the University of Michigan quarterback, has tended to his confidence by increasing his preparation for the upcoming season.
McCARTHY: "It's everything, mechanics, mental, emotional stuff. Arm care, recovery, nutrition, everything. All of that funnels into the same thing: your body [mind]and your performance."
Many strategies build athletic confidence. However, no method will work unless you put it to use. Here is a small list of ways for you to build confidence, feel mentally prepared heading into a competition, and increase the likelihood of success:![]()
* Focus on what you do well, not just what you need to improve
* Prepare for every competition as if it was the championship
* Spend time daily on your mental preparedness
* Use adversity as a learning opportunity
* Credit yourself for improvement. Success is not just wins and losses
* Have a game plan before arriving at the competition site
* Work hard in practices and training sessions.
* Challenge yourself when training
If you are not taking the time to grow your confidence, your mental game will stagnate, and your confidence and performance will suffer.
Work on having stable confidence for several weeks....
For example, you can build confidence by recalling previous successes. Write a list of successes, and each day, add 2-3 past successes to your list for three weeks. By the end of that period, you will have identified between 21-63 athletic accomplishments.
Confidence is a long-term project and must be earned.![]()
Did you know that you or your athletes can do mental training from the comfort of your home or office?
You can do one-on-one mental coaching via Facetime, Skype or Zoom with us from anywhere. We work with athletes about 12 years and up. And mental training is not just for elite or professional athletes.
If you are interested in mental coaching, try our free 15-minute introductory session. Just respond to this email with your name and what you want to improve.
We look forward to helping you improve your mental toughness!![]()
